A sola scriptura demonstration that the God who acted in AD 30–70 will act again at the close of the age.
Phase IV · The Futurist Climax
The un-pausing of Daniel's prophetic clock and the literal, ultimate resolution of history — from the Two Witnesses through Zechariah 14 to the Restitution of All Things.
Romans 2:9–10 — The Covenantal Order — Judgment & Glory.
"Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile."
AD 70 was tribulation to the Jew first — the prefigure. The Futurist Climax is its antitype: Jerusalem again at the centre, the Two Witnesses again in the street, the nations again gathered against the city — but now the scope is global.
Unit 4.1
The final, missing half-week — the remaining 3.5 years / 1,260 days of Daniel's 70th week — will eventually un-pause as history approaches its end.
The Two Witnesses (Rev 11:3). Duration: the final 3.5-year block (1,260 days) is occupied by their literal ministry in Jerusalem. Role: the ultimate, supernaturally protected signposts of God's covenant during the closing days of the age. Power: authority to shut heaven from rain, turn waters to blood, and strike the earth with plagues (Rev 11:6) — a direct echo of Moses and Elijah. The Post-Witness Vacuum: the global fury their ministry generates triggers the climactic invasion of Jerusalem.
The Sequential Trigger — Rev 11:3–15. Their ministry → death (Rev 11:7–8) → three-and-a-half days in the street (Rev 11:9) → resurrection and ascension (Rev 11:11–12) → then, and only then: the Seventh Trumpet sounds (Rev 11:15).
The Witnesses Identified — Moses, Elijah, and the Last Prophecy. The Moses-Type (Rev 11:6b · Exodus 7–12): power over waters to turn them to blood and to smite the earth with all plagues. The Elijah-Type (Rev 11:6a · 1 Kings 17:1 · James 5:17): power to shut heaven, that it rain not — the three-and-a-half-year drought that is the duration of their ministry.
The Transfiguration — The Last Time They Appeared Together (Matthew 17:1–5). Moses and Elijah are the last two OT prophets seen with Christ before the Cross, and the last two prophets seen with Christ at the end of the age.
The Last Word of the Old Testament (Malachi 4:5–6 · Matthew 17:11):
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers."
Malachi 4:5–6
Jesus confirms the promise is still open:
"Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things."
Matthew 17:11
The Pattern — Elijah's Unfinished Business (1 Kings 19:15–16). Elijah is commissioned to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha; he anoints only Elisha, and the remaining two are completed by Elisha. Each Elijah-figure leaves the second half of the commission for the next bearer of the spirit.
The Divided Commission — Malachi 4:6 Has Two Clauses. Clause 1 — "turn the heart of the fathers to the children" — fulfilled by John (Luke 1:17). Clause 2 — "and the heart of the children to their fathers" — omitted by Gabriel; it belongs to a different Elijah in a different age, preparing the children of the age to receive what the fathers were promised.
Doctrinal Note
The first major modern candidate for an end-time Elijah was John Alexander Dowie (1847–1907), who declared himself Elijah the Restorer in 1901. He was not an isolated phenomenon — his claim inaugurated a lineage of Gentile Elijah proposals that has continued in Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity ever since. At the time the Jewish people had no national existence, and the replacement-theology inference was not unreasonable on its own terms: if Israel no longer exists as a covenant nation, the Malachi 4:6b promise must migrate to the Church, which is spiritual Israel. The Gentile Elijah is the predictable output of consistent replacement theology applied to a specific prophetic text under specific historical conditions.
The Metric Restored — 1948 and Its Exegetical Consequence. The founding of the State of Israel in 1948, and the return of Jerusalem to Jewish sovereignty in 1967, did not merely change the geopolitical map — they restored the prophetic metric. Daniel 9:24 specifies the covenant scope as "thy people and thy holy city." Leviticus 26 suspends its curse-execution during desolation and resumes when the people return to the land. Clause 2 of Malachi 4:6 requires a people who exist in relationship to that land; since 1948, they do.
The Original Specificity Reasserts Itself. The necessity that generated the Gentile Elijah hypothesis no longer exists. Clause 2 of Malachi 4:6 is directionally specific: children → fathers — the present generation of Israel turning back toward their covenantal heritage. This is the Teshuva direction — שׁוּב (shuv), covenantal return — that runs through Acts 3:19 (epistrephō) and Romans 11:26. A Gentile Elijah operating within the Church cannot fulfil a commission whose object is Israel's national Teshuva. The Elijah of clause 2 comes to Israel, in Israel, at the end of the age — not as a substitute for a displaced people, but as a minister to a returned one.
The Rock Smitten Twice
Paul identifies the rock smitten in the wilderness as Christ: "they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ" (1 Cor 10:4). The rock is struck twice, and both times water flows. First Smiting — Exodus 17 (one strike): the type of Calvary — the Rock smitten once, the side pierced, blood and water flowing (John 19:34); the Spirit poured at Pentecost (Acts 2), the former rain. Second Smiting — Numbers 20 (double strike): Moses smites the rock twice, unauthorized; water flows, but Moses is judged. The water is the latter rain (Joel 2:23, 28–29). The Structural Law — No Smiting, No Water: the outpouring requires the smiting. The second smiting is not a second atonement but a second witness to the first.
Jerusalem: Spiritually Called Sodom & Egypt (Revelation 11:8). The pin "where also our Lord was crucified" identifies Jerusalem with absolute precision. "Sodom" names the crime — receiving and killing the witnesses (as in Genesis 19). "Egypt" names the consequence — the city becomes the object of the very plague-ministry it sought to silence (Rev 11:6). The Witnesses' martyrdom is the consummation of a pattern Jerusalem began at Calvary.
The Reverse Ascension — Acts 1 Mirrored in Revelation 11. The Ascension (Acts 1:9–11): one ascends into a cloud; two witnesses remain on earth with a promise. The Reverse (Rev 11:11–12): two ascend into a cloud; the One descends — immediately, in the same sequence, to the same geography. The Seventh Trumpet is the hinge between the two events.
The Kingdom Transfer
I · Received in Heaven (Dan 7:9–10, 13–14): the court already in session — the Son of Man comes on the clouds to receive dominion, glory, and an everlasting kingdom. This is the Ascension moment, held in heaven until the Seventh Trumpet transfers it to earth.
II · Not Yet on Earth (John 18:36):
"My kingdom is not of this world… but now is my kingdom not from hence."
John 18:36
The "now" is temporal, not ontological.
III · Established on Earth (Rev 11:15): the aorist marks a single, decisive moment of transfer.
Unit 4.2
Zechariah 14:1–4 — All Nations Against Jerusalem · Divine Intervention:
"For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle… Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations… And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives."
Zechariah 14:1–4
Zechariah 14:2 describes a forced international partition — "half of the city shall go forth into captivity" — creating the exact crisis point that triggers the physical return of Christ at verse 4.
Matthew 24:29 — The Cosmic Shaking.
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven."
Matthew 24:29
This is the heavenly sign that the all-nations coalition below (Zech 14:2) has reached the point of no return. Sequence: the final 3.5 years resume → ministry of the Two Witnesses → the all-nations coalition marches on Jerusalem → the cosmic shaking → the physical Second Coming → the Restitution of All Things.
Unit 4.3
Three Prophetic Vantage Points — One War. Zechariah 14, Ezekiel 38–39, and Revelation 16:12–16 (Armageddon) are not three separate future wars; they are the same climactic event from three vantage points — Jerusalem itself, the invading coalition, and the heavenly throne.
Exegetical Defence — Why Neither Historical Alternative Holds. The Babylonian reading fails because Israel was not "dwelling safely without walls," Babylon is absent from the coalition, the regathering had not occurred, and the text dates itself "in the latter days" (be-acharit ha-yamim). The Maccabean reading fails because the nations are wrong, Israel was under persecution, the victory was human rather than divine, and nothing matches the scale. The Phase 4 placement is the only one that meets all the text's conditions.
The Two Outstanding Preconditions — Why the Invasion Cannot Happen Yet. ① Israel Must Be Dwelling Without Walls (Ezek 38:11). Contemporary Israel maintains the Iron Dome, a security barrier, and a standing army — the opposite of "dwelling without walls." A prior peace arrangement of extraordinary scope would have to emerge. ② The Two Witnesses Must Complete Their Ministry (Rev 11:3–15). No Two Witnesses have yet appeared; no 1,260-day ministry has begun. The clock is waiting on the Witnesses; the Witnesses are waiting on Phase 3.
The Geopolitical Mechanisms. I · The UN Partition Framework (Zech 14:2 · Rev 11:2). II · The Har Megiddo Assembly (Rev 16:12–16) — a literal international military mobilisation. III · The Zechariah 14 Return — The Yashbit Reversal: Christ occupies the posture of Psalm 110:1 ("Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool"). When Zechariah 14:4 records that "his feet shall stand" on the Mount of Olives, the Yashbit posture ends.
Unit 4.4
Acts 3:19–21 — The Condition · The Promise · The Constraint.
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ… Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things."
Acts 3:19–21
The three verses form a single movement: repentance (v.19) triggers the times of refreshing and the sending of Messiah (v.20), who is held in heaven by divine necessity until the Restitution arrives (v.21). One Greek Root — Two Witnesses to the Same Event: Christ's promise on the Transfiguration mount (Matt 17:11 — ἀποκαταστήσει πάντα, "restore all things") and Peter's sermon at the Temple gate (Acts 3:21 — ἀποκαταστάσεως πάντων) reach for the same root, ἀποκαθίστημι — to restore to a former state.
Joseph the Co-Regent
The Joseph narrative is one of the most structurally complete messianic types in all of Scripture — not merely in his suffering and exaltation, but in the precise sequence that follows: the co-regency, the Gentile bride, the disguise, and the unveiling.
Joseph — The Type: sold and rejected by his brothers (Gen 37:28); exalted to co-regent — Pharaoh says "only in the throne will I be greater than thee" (Gen 41:40); marries Asenath, a Gentile bride (Gen 41:45); brothers come to Egypt and do not recognise him (Gen 42:8); Gentiles (Egyptians) know Joseph and bow before him (Gen 41:43); Joseph removes his Egyptian disguise and weeps — "I am Joseph your brother" (Gen 45:3). Christ — The Antitype: delivered up and rejected by Israel (Matt 27:25); seated at the Father's right hand (Ps 110:1 · Acts 2:33); takes a Gentile bride during the interval — the Church of the present age; Israel does not recognise Yeshua — the veil of Romans 11:25 remains; Gentiles currently know Yeshua unveiled — the Church sees him as he is; at the Seventh Trumpet, Christ unveils himself to Israel (Zech 12:10 · Matt 23:39).
The Egyptian Disguise — The Veil Over Israel. Joseph in Egypt appeared to his brothers as an Egyptian lord — dressed in linen, speaking through an interpreter. Nothing about his outward presentation said Hebrew brother. The disguise was the providential form his exaltation took in a Gentile world. Yeshua, exalted to the co-regency of heaven, has been known and proclaimed across two thousand years primarily through a Gentile church. To Israel he has appeared, as Joseph did, as a figure of Gentile religion — unrecognisable as the son of David. The "Egyptian disguise" is Romans 11:25 made visual: the veil holds until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.
The Unveiling — "I Am Joseph Your Brother." The unveiling is not a judicial act — it is a weeping. Joseph does not first accuse; he first weeps and then identifies (Gen 45:1–4). The brothers are troubled at his presence — the same register as Zechariah 12:10: "they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn." The Elijah-type Witness has done his work first — hearts turned, the Teshuva in progress — so that when Christ removes the "Egyptian disguise" at the Seventh Trumpet, the recognition is met with mourning and restoration. Matthew 23:39 is the hinge: "Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
The Pauline Confirmation
Romans 11 and Israel's Teshuva. The Hebrew שׁוּב (shuv) means a directional, covenantal turning back.
"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery… that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob."
Romans 11:25–27
Romans 11:15: the "receiving" of Israel is described as life from the dead. Paul reaches for resurrection language to describe Israel's corporate turning — not metaphor, but the same language Daniel 12:1–3 uses and the same event the Seventh Trumpet announces (Rev 11:15). The Teshuva of Romans 11, the Restitution of Acts 3:21, and the kingdom transfer of Revelation 11:15 are one moment seen from three windows.
Two Resurrections
Wave 1 — The Firstfruits Seal (AD 30 · Matt 27:52–53 · Isa 26:19–20). At the moment of Calvary, graves open. Immediately after Christ's resurrection, the OT saints rise bodily and appear in Jerusalem. These redeemed firstborns — the Old Covenant faithful purchased by Passover blood — enter a "Chamber of Rest" (Isa 26:20) during the 40-year generation gap. They are the nucleus of the 144,000 firstfruits on Mt. Sion (Rev 14:1).
Wave 2 — The General Harvest (Future · Rev 11:15 · 1 Cor 15:52). At the Seventh Trumpet — the Last Trump — the dead in Christ rise and the living are caught up. This is the main harvest: the innumerable Gentile multitude of Revelation 7:9 who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb across the whole gospel age — grounded in the berit olam, the Noahic covenant made with Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Gen 9:8–17). The firstfruits on Mt. Sion are the earnest; this is the full payment of the same purchase.
The Typological Key — Moses and Joshua (Yeshua). Moses leads Israel out of Egypt — out of bondage, out of the house of death — patterning the first resurrection. He does not cross the Jordan. Joshua — whose name is the same as Jesus (יְהוֹשׁוּעַ / יֵשׁוּעַ) — leads the new generation into the Promised Land, patterning the second. The wilderness is the present age: the gospel age raises up the new generation who will enter the inheritance, while the firstfruits await on Mt. Sion. The Jordan is the Seventh Trumpet; Zechariah 14:4 is the moment the walls come down.
Twelve Spies and Two — The Witnesses Prefigured. Moses — Twelve Spies (Num 13): one from each tribe, sent to the whole house of Israel; ten return with an evil report; the generation that came out cannot enter. Joshua — Two Spies (Josh 2): sent before the Jordan crossing, before the conquest; they return with a faithful report: "Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land" (Josh 2:24). These two spies — sent immediately before the final conquest — are the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11, whose 1,260-day ministry precedes the Seventh Trumpet and the Parousia.
The Seventh Trumpet & The Last Trump
Revelation 10:7 — The Mystery Finished: the Seventh Trumpet's sounding finishes the mystery of God. Paul's Corroboration of the Seven Thunders (2 Cor 12:2–4):
"I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago… caught up to the third heaven… heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter."
2 Corinthians 12:2–4
The "not lawful" is the language of a divine injunction — precisely John's injunction at Rev 10:4. Paul, knowing John and knowing the seal, describes the experience while honouring the prohibition.
"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."
1 Corinthians 15:52
1 Thessalonians 4:16: "the trump of God." Why the Seventh Trumpet Was Not Sounded in AD 70: the dead in Christ did not rise; the mystery of God was not finished; the kingdoms did not become Christ's; and the Two Witnesses had not completed their ministry. When it sounds, everything moves at once.
A Question to the Reader: If the "last trump" of 1 Corinthians 15:52 sounds before the Great Tribulation, should it not more accurately be called the second-to-last trump? Paul's eschatē salpinx is the Seventh. A trumpet can only be called "last" if no trumpet follows it.
Zechariah 14:9 — The Final State:
"And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one."
Zechariah 14:9
Every unit converges at this single, final trumpet blast. Paul and John, writing independently from Corinth and Patmos, are two apostolic witnesses to the same inescapable conclusion: there is one Last Trump, and when it sounds, the age ends.
Consider
The "last trump" of 1 Corinthians 15:52 must be the Seventh Trumpet of Revelation 11:15 — the one after which no trumpet follows. How does this reorder the resurrection and the Parousia?
